Chapter 12

Over the next two weeks, Tami and Archer worked to mesh their lives together. Tami had been amazed at the bank when Archer had put ten thousand dollars in her new checking account. She’d never even dreamed of having that much extra cash. She knew she’d never touch that money. It was Archer’s, but just knowing the large sum was there, reassured her that she had emergency funds.

With Archer’s computer help, they had reviewed the records she had transcribed into a spiral notebook. He had come up with better order for her visits that streamlined her travel between each yard she cleaned. Tami hadn’t wanted to do the next step that her daddy had recommended, but she knew he was right. She’d contacted five customers who were always behind in their payments and asked them to enroll in automatic payments. Four refused, and she sadly had given them notice that she wouldn’t return if they were not able to pay the outstanding balance and agree to pay her at the time of each visit.

All four had chosen to clean their own yards. Archer had warned that they would call back later. He predicted after a couple weeks, they would decide that it was a job they’d rather pay someone to do for them. Unfortunately, her new schedule wouldn’t have any space to add them to Tami’s newly rearranged visits.

The little stuff that had still remained in her apartment, they’d thrown in the dumpster. The aggressive rodents had gotten into the small amount of food that she had stored in the cabinets. All her clothes and personal items were already at Archer’s.

She had wanted to take her mattress until they’d picked it up. The gnawed hole in the fabric covering the bottom of the mattress revealed that several rats had been sleeping in her bed with her. Tami almost fainted. The mattress had joined the ruined plastic containers, and the two withered apples from her refrigerator in that big metal dumpster.

The only good thing was that the rats didn’t show up to wave goodbye as they left. Tami glanced over her shoulder at the dilapidated apartment building where she’d been living since her parents had decided it was time she was on her own. Already, Archer’s house felt more like a home than her apartment had. Really, more like a home than she’d ever had. She turned back around to look out the windshield, dismissing the past. She glanced to her left at the amazing man who wanted nothing more than to be her daddy. How could she be so lucky?
